Ganglands
War Stories Part 1
Social Context - Gangs, Power & Racism
The Crips emerged from the void left in many communities after the fall of the Black Panthers. They were influenced by the imagery and aesthetic as well as parts of the politic deployed by the Panthers.
How does race affect the stories and stereotypes we learn about people? How does everyday imagery limit our ability to few people three dimensional characters?
Imagery & Storytelling
What the two clips posted above one after the other. They are both trailers for the same movie. They both use clips from the same movie - neither trailer has made up its own clips. Although both trailers use images from the same source material, one is clearly more true to the actual movie than the other. This is because the second trailer (Shining, rather than The Shining) manipulates audio and visual imagery in order to present a different perspective on the same film. In a similar way, autobiographies and documentaries can manipulate real source material to present one side of a story without actually lying.
Making decisions about what elements of a story you present and how is very important to building an argument, a character or a different version of reality.
